At the front lines of the First World War a company of British soldiers awaits a German attack. Abandoned by their commanders and led by a Captain who regularly turns to drink to manage his shattered nerves, they have little chance of survival. However one of their company, a young recruit called Raleigh, is determined to get them all home - not least because the Captain is also engaged to his sister.
