Rachel Duckhouse: Seashells Build Bone

Tue 10 Apr - Sat 5 May 2018

The inspiration for this exhibition comes from the mysterious patterns that induce human stem cells to produce bone.

Entry: Free

This exhibition began with the story of an ancient Mayan skull that contained false teeth carved from an oyster shell. The shell teeth had been accepted by the jawbone, which had grown new bone, generated by its response to the shell. Artist Rachel Duckhouse worked with biominerals expert Professor Maggie Cusack to explore the structural patterns within oyster shells using electron microscopy. The mysterious patterns that induce human stem cells to produce bone are the inspiration for this exhibition. Funded by The Leverhulme Trust.
