The story of a young boy in the Midwest is told simultaneously with a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years ago as they both seek the same mysterious connection.

Ben and Rose are from different worlds, but have lots in common - they’re hearing-impaired, unhappy and dream of a better life. In 1977, Ben’s life is shattered by the death of his mother, then he finds a note about his father and sets off to New York to find him. In 1927, Rose loves silent movie star Lillian Mayhew and runs off to the Big Apple to find her. Mysteriously drawn to the Amercan Museum of Natural History their paths somehow entertwine.
