Description
The classic George Orwell story set in a world where absolute conformity in action, word and thought including loyalty to Big Brother is demanded. In 1984, the world is divided into three vast states, whose inhabitants are dominated by all powerful governments. Winston, a worker, starts an illegal love affair with Julia, and becomes the target of a brain-washing campaign to force him to conform.

Prior to the film screening Professor Stephen Ingle, Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Stirling will talk about themes of 1984, in the context of Orwell's political thought generally, and of their political impact. Professor Ingle is an expert in George Orwell and has written seven books on Orwell's life, his most recent Orwell Reconsidered was published in 2020.

This screening is held in conjunction with the Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth exhibition on display in the University library from 26th January to 23rd February 2025.
